Create hope and it will heal the pain of ignorance: Our Story

While doing his Ph. D at the University of Kentucky (1988-94), Dr. George Mathew (G) envisioned combining the individual learning styles of Socrates (S), Einstein (E), and Newton (N) to make students more engaged and active in class (patent pending). After much sweat, he took a few students under his wings and tested his process as a tutor. His students went from D or C to mostly A or B Grades - only a super minority of students remained at C level. Faculty also took note of wild swings in their grades between first exam failure scores (before)and second exam good score performances. Word spread around the campus that George was good at helping students get better grades even when he had nothing to do with grading. Sorority students called George to rescue them as physics was a hard subject to learn. Faculty referred students to George. One such student was Kevin.

Kevin was a legally blind student. Kevin needed special accommodation to study physics at the University of Kentucky. George was contacted by Professor Peter Eklund and the Office of Disability Services to be a paid tutor to Kevin. Not knowing what to expect, he took Kevin as a challenge. George realized that Kevin could see at "centimeter" distances. That helped. There were topics in physics that required visualization: for example right hand-rule. The process was well taken by Kevin. Kevin ended up with a B. So what is this process?

With support from Dr. Kumble Subbaswamy, and Dr. Joseph Straley, he re-wrote most of the important chapters of a standard textbook to take out the PhD language before lecture (teachers request students to read the textbook ahead of lecture), and to incorporate the "SENG (Socrates, Einstein, Newton, and George)" style. George called each question he created "prelects" for pre-lecture help. George's prelects should not be interpreted as a substitute for textbook. For his process to succeed, textbook is a must.

George gave students a large number of short questions. Initially, this led to complaints from a few individual students. They complained that this process required devoting a lot more time to physics compared to other subjects. Faculty, especially Dr. Kumble Subbaswamy, thought otherwise. He encouraged me to continue what I was doing. The ones who complained was a super minority. Once they saw that this process was helping them not only to learn but master the concepts, they also joined in being enthusiastic - at least most of them. At the end, George was nominated for the Chancellor’s Award for the Best Teacher, an award given out by the Dean of Students.

After George Mathew introduced prelects to his students, grades improved for the ones who were committed to this process: there was now solid evidence that students performed much better. Suddenly "C" students were tasting success, and were better students. Class attendance improved. Students now followed what was happening in physics. They were tasting success. They had grades to prove it. The steps of the Chemistry-Physics Building at the University of Kentucky were busy with students discussing physics - a priceless sight. By this time, faculty was also curious enough to ask questions – because the campus felt different. There was a new enthusiasm for physics.

When George finished his Ph. D., he sent the sample questions to the Ohio State University at Columbus. They blessed him with ten years of adoption of his work - each year it was reviewed and adopted for the next academic year. One student who used the book at Ohio State gave it five stars at Amazon.com. Another student was quoted to have performed at the highest level for the Pre-Med MCAT. Yet another student, Ms. Elise, had the following comment: "Your books (I am using the Electricity and Magnetism book now) have meant so much to me in helping me understand the coursework. Breaking down the load of concepts into small pieces allows me to see exactly where I am understanding, or not understanding, the concepts. I am a pre-medical student as well as a wife and mother of three, so I need a more targeted style of learning. Your books have truly been godsends, I just can't say enough good things about them. When taking the mechanics course, I found that going through all the Mathew's problems (not just the assigned problems) was an outstanding preparation for exams. I have advised my fellow students to go through all the problems in your books to be sure they truly understand the concepts. As the premed students will need to demonstrate this understanding on the MCAT, it is important that we not just regurgitate semi-stored knowledge on the exam. Your book leads to the deep understanding and development of almost a physics 'logic' that is really priceless. I have even used the book in a simplified manner to help demonstrate some of the principles of physics to my three daughters (age 10, 7, 4). By using this book, I earned an A in physics and gained a greater understanding of the course work."

Twice, Dr. George Mathew was invited as the keynote speaker for regional meetings of physics teachers. He had given multiple talks at schools and at Teacher Quality Summits. He taught at high school, community college, and university. He understands students. He connects with them. He could be reached for consultation by calling (513)777-8893. Due to limited time on hand and resources, he can only do so much.

With the funds George received as royalty, he started a FREE website CuteScience.com. It was his way of telling the world: THANK YOU. In 2001, George Mathew and his team added a children's science book. It catapulted to the #1 ranked Children's Science Book on Google Search. It was an engineering/physics book written for the fourth grade students. More than 2,005,415 (2+ million) FREE accesses happened at CuteScience.com.

Dr. George Mathew started HDTVEDU.COM. It is now about the passion of our hard working people. PASSION because we strongly believe that our system can and will eventually help you to succeed. Note that four year undergraduate degree holders make much more income than non-degree seekers. For all that sweat we do - we put back 90% - we want to see that passion returned by you for us.
